Birth and Babies

In many Indigenous communities, giving birth is seen as a sacred ceremonial process. While maternal health is still an issue in Indigenous communities, there are efforts to train more midwives in Indigenous birthing practices.

Cultural Narrative

Several community members shared about the importance of birth and birthing, specifically as it relates to caring for our children and future generations. One community member described bringing children into the world as an expression of "brown joy". Another shared a story about her own traumatic birth, which has been part of her journey toward healing and strength and she calls for more support of midwives and Indigenous traditional practices.
