Devil's hand tree

Devil's hand tree or Flor de manita comes from a tree native to southern Mexico and Guatemala. The flowers are predominantly used, although the leaves and bark can also be used to make tinctures for medicinal purposes.

Cultural Narrative

One community member described how she was taught by an elder from Mexico to use a tincture made from flor de manita to help her with anxiety and stress. She said that whenever she is feeling stressed or anxious, she still uses a few drops of the tincture to help reduce her symptoms. 

The flowers have been used for centuries in traditional medicine in Mexico. It has been commonly used to address nervousness, epilepsy, headaches, insomnia, depression, dizziness, for pain, inflammation, ulcers and stimulant for heart problems. The flowers have also been used as a wash to treat any pain affecting the pubic area and, in a poultice, to help aid hemorrhoids.
