Cultural Narrative

One community member described her father giving her a mouthful of geranium flowers when she was sick or had a sore throat as a child. While it was bitter in taste, she said "it worked". 

Geranium is known to be used by Indigenous peoples of North America for sore throats, infected gums, mouth ulcers, and oral thrush. It has been used in many countries all over the world in traditional medicine. It has anti-inflammatory, haemostatic, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antidiarrhoeic, antiallergic, anti-cancer, antihepatotoxic, diuretic and tonic properties, and has been used to treat digestive issues.
