Cultural Narrative

Several community members described using Palo Santo to burn in smudge for purification or to center themselves. It can be used on its own or in combination with other medicinal herbs to smudge. Palo santo has long been used by communities around the world. It was referred to as the ìholy stickî and ìthe saints woodî by the Incas in Ecuador as traditional medicine. Palo santo is used to address rheumatism, cleanse bad energy and help aid stomach ailments. When burned it smells like burnt sugar or baked apples. The wood can also be turned into oils and used for aromatherapy.
