Cultural Narrative

One community member described the use of ruda/rue (ruta graveolens) in several healing techniques to address stress, anxiety, and spiritual ailments. The community member, from the Ñuu Saavi tribe of Oaxaca described the herb "yuku lota'a", in his tribal language, as having medicinal properties when used as smoke (blown over the patient in ceremony), for purification (dry herb swabbed over the body), and for protection (in a liquid sprayed or splashed on the body in combination with six other sacred herbs).

Rue is known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Traditionally, it has been used to address digestive issues, including colic. While clinical trials are lacking, some research has demonstrated its effectiveness in alleviating cardiovascular and diabetes complications, including supporting improved blood circulation, inflammation, and hypertension.
