Cultural Narrative

Several community members talked about chamomile as part of their cultural medicine cabinet, describing using it especially as a tea to help with reducing stress, calming anxiety, soothing an upset stomach, and to soothe sore throats and other cold and respiratory issues. 

Some research shows that chamomile may help with a wide range of ailments and medical conditions, such as alleviating depression, treating insomnia and reducing anxiety. It is known to be anti-inflammatory and high in antioxidants. It has also been shown to help patients in remission from ulcerative colitis. Teas can help with colds, flu and fevers. The tinctures can help treat toothaches, arthritis, gout and premenstrual symptoms. It can also be used in a compress to soothe skin rashes, burns, scalds and sores, as well as used to gargle for mouth ulcers and as an eye wash due to its gentle properties.
